Sometimes, you just need a super easy pie crust option. This Oreo Crust recipe should be your go-to! Oreo Cookie crusts are a fantastic choice for when you want a chocolatey crust but don't want to make from scratch Chocolate Pastry.

This recipe uses only a handful of ingredients, and it takes less than 5 minutes to put together. You can either bake it briefly for a lovely toasted effect or freeze it for a no-bake pie option! It's perfect for so many pies but especially great for all this Mint Chocolate Chip Pie and this Peanut Butter Pie.

Oreo Pie Crust Ingredients

Here is an overview of the ingredients needed for this recipe. The full recipe is listed below in greater detail.

  • oreos, or any chocolate cream sandwich cookie
  • butter
  • sugar (though this is optional)

Depending on the type of pie you are making, sugar is an optional ingredient for this pie crust recipe. Oreos already have a lot of sugar in them, so technically this recipe doesn't need any added sweetener.

However, adding the sugar in this recipe actually functions to make the pie crust more sturdy (see the explanation of this below in the section about baking a pie crust).

But for some recipes, especially ones that already have a rather sweet filling, the added sugar in this pie crust might be too much (an example would be this Candy Cane Pie, which has a very sweet filling and therefore doesn't call for adding any sugar to the pie crust). So while technically you can omit the sugar in this recipe, it is added to make the crust more sturdy, so know the crust will be just a bit more crumbly if it doesn't have it in.

Troubleshooting Tips

Chocolate sandwich cookies, whether you use an actual Oreo or another brand, can vary. So while this recipe is rather straightforward, there is some nuance as to how wet or dry the mixture is when you add the butter to the oreo crumbs.

The crumb mixture should be the consistency of wet sand. If for any reason your crumb crust is extremely dry, you can add one tablespoon of melted butter–one tablespoon at a time–to the oreo crumbs until they are evenly moistened.

Alternatively, if your mixture is too wet and it is hard to work with, add more oreo crumbs until it is just moistened enough for the crumbs to stick together easily.

Steps to Make an Oreo Crust

  1. Grind up the chocolate sandwich cookies until they are fine crumbs. Do this with a food processor. If you choose to do it by hand, make sure to get the oreos smashed into fine pieces. Big chunks of oreo can make the crust too crumbly.
  2. Melt the butter on the stove in a medium pot. Shut off the heat.
  3. Add the oreo crumbs to the melted butter right in that pot (no need to dirty a bowl for this) and mix it well. If you are using sugar, add it here too.
  4. Add the crumb mixture to the pie plate and form the crust.
  5. Now the pie can be par-baked (see more on this below) or put in the freezer to harden up.

The Best Way to Form an Oreo Crust

Forget everything you know about pressing an oreo crust into your pie plate because we've all been doing it wrong! While logic might tell you to place the crumb mixture in the middle of your pie plate and start pressing it in at that point, that actually makes it messy and difficult to get an even crumb base all the way up the sides.

The easier way to do it is to start forming the edges of the pie crust first, and then press the crumb mixture down into the bottom of the plate.

Here are the steps:

  1. Gather the crumb mixture loosely up the sides of the plate until all the edges are covered with crumbs.
  2. Form the top edges of the crust and neaten them up by pressing them together with two fingers. It may feel like you won't have enough crumbs to fit the bottom of the pie at this point, but you will.
  3. Start packing down the sides of the crumb crust with your thumb in an even layer. As you do this, start moving the excess crumb mixture toward the center of the pie plate.
  4. Continue packing the crumbs from the outer edges towards the middle until you have established a single layer.
  5. Using the flat bottom of a measuring cup, pack down the crumbs until everything is tight and even.

Do You Have to Bake an Oreo Crust?

You have two options for preparing this crust. You can blind bake it or freeze it.

There are pros and cons to each. But first, let's understand that the butter and the sugar play important roles in making sure the crumb crust stays together for each of these methods. Then, you'll know which method is best for your pie.

Freezing the crust works because the melted butter becomes solidified and bonds the crust together. The sugar might melt slightly from the warmth of the butter, but without the par-bake, the sugar doesn't melt enough to act as a binding agent here.

While freezing the crust is certainly easier than having to preheat an oven and par-bake the crust, it is not as sturdy as the baked version. I only recommend freezing the crust if you will be serving your pie when very cold. Otherwise, you'll just find your crumb crust to be very crumbly!

When you bake a crumb crust, you are melting the added sugar which then helps bond the crust together. Baking it results in a crispy crust. But not only that, it also deepens the flavor of the pie by toasting up the chocolate crust.

I prefer the par-baking method and will always bake it if I can. If you are planning to bake a pie that will be served from the refrigerator or will be left out of the refrigerator for more than 20 minutes, I recommend you par-bake the crust to ensure it holds together.

Types of Pies Can to Use with an Oreo Crust

This crust recipe is truly versatile. Pair this oreo crust recipe with nearly all styles of pie such as:

  • no bake cheesecake style pies
  • cream pies
  • ice cream pies
  • chiffon pies
  • chocolate pies

The only type of pie that wouldn't work well with an oreo crust is a custard pie. Custard recipes generally have too much liquid, and sometimes when you pour a thin filling into an oreo crust, it will cause the crumbs to break apart and rise to the top of the pie. So I don't recommend using this recipe for any sort of custard filling.

You can use either traditional oreo style sandwich cookies or gluten-free style chocolate sandwich cookies. If using gluten-free you may need to use more cookie crumbs because they can shrink up after absorbing the butter.
